The truth is, Apple needs to get on Verizon, and fast, or it risks losing customers to Android. If Verizon gets the iPhone, I’d expect a huge exodus from AT&T. Which probably explains some of AT&T’s recent behavior. With the release of iPhone 4, AT&T made an unusual offer to current owners of iPhones, telling them that even if their contracts weren’t close to being over, they could still push up their expiration date and upgrade to the iPhone 4—as long as they signed a new two-year contract.

Many people jumped on that offer, and some even viewed it as a case of AT&T being generous. Um, not likely. More likely it’s that AT&T knows its exclusive lock on iPhone is coming to an end, and so it sought to lock in as many iPhone users before the deal with Verizon happens.

To those folks who waited in line for hours and hours to take advantage of AT&T’s “generous” offer, I can only offer my condolences and point out that, given AT&T’s past behavior, you should have known better.

13 Steps to a better life → getrichslowly.org

I really like this and I want to see if I can follow all 13. Also, www.getrichslowly.org is an awesome site.

13 steps to a better life
What does all this mean to you? If money won’t bring you happiness, what will? How can you stop making yourself miserable and start learning to love life? According to my research, these are the thirteen actions most likely to encourage happiness:

  1. Don’t compare yourself to others. Financially, physically, and socially, comparing yourself to others is a trap. You will always have friends who have more money than you do, who can run faster than you can, who are more successful in their careers. Focus on your own life, on your own goals.
  2. Foster close relationships. People with five or more close friends are more apt to describe themselves as happy than those with fewer.
  3. Have sex. Sex, especially with someone you love, is consistently ranked as a top source of happiness. A long-term loving partnership goes hand-in-hand with this.
  4. Get regular exercise. There’s a strong tie between physical health and happiness. Anyone who has experienced a prolonged injury or illness knows just how emotionally devastating it can be. Eat right, exercise, and take care of our body. (And read Get Fit Slowly!)
  5. Obtain adequate sleep. Good sleep is an essential component of good health. When you’re not well-rested, your body and your mind do not operate at peak capacity. Your mood suffers. (Read more in my brief guide to better sleep.)
  6. Set and pursue goals. I believe that the road to wealth is paved with goals. More than that, the road to happiness is paved with goals. Continued self-improvement makes life more fulfilling.
  7. Find meaningful work. There are some who argue a job is just a job. I believe that fulfilling work is more than that — it’s a vocation. It can take decades to find the work you were meant to do. But when you find it, it can bring added meaning to your life.
  8. Join a group. Those who are members of a group, like a church congregation, experience greater happiness. But the group doesn’t have to be religious. Join a book group. Meet others for a Saturday morning bike ride. Sit in at the knitting circle down at the yarn shop.
  9. Don’t dwell on the past. I know a guy who beats himself up over mistakes he’s made before. Rather than concentrate on the present (or, better yet, on the future), he lets the past eat away at his happiness. Focus on the now.
  10. Embrace routine. Research shows that although we believe we want variety and choice, we’re actually happier with limited options. It’s not that we want no choice at all, just that we don’t want to be overwhelmed. Routines help limit choices. They’re comfortable and familiar and, used judiciously, they can make us happy.
  11. Practice moderation. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. It’s okay to indulge yourself on occasion — just don’t let it get out of control. Addictions and compulsions can ruin lives.
  12. Be grateful. It’s no accident that so many self-help books encourage readers to practice gratitude. When we regularly take time to be thankful for the things we have, we appreciate them more. We’re less likely to take them for granted, and less likely to become jealous of others.
  13. Help others. Over and over again, studies have shown that altruism is one of the best ways to boost your happiness. Sure, volunteering at the local homeless shelter helps, but so too does just being nice in daily life.

Quote of the day from my desk calendar

Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing. -Theodore Roosevelt

My work is worth doing, I work hard at it. But, I don’t enjoy it! I am searching for that zen place where I occasionally like my job and everyonce in a while feel like my effort has a purpose! My goal is to find that in the next 6 months.

Cook cook cooking

Yum. I love food. Most of all I love creating food. Especially if it is healthly stuff! Cooking is one of my greatest joys. And even though its hard to do more work after coming home from work, it some how relaxes me to go into the kitchen and whip something nourishing up.

Here is a recipe I recently created. To give you a little background, my husband and I love Mexican food. One of our favorites is chicken enchiladas. So, when my husband decided to give up meat for Lent, I knew I’d have to think of some good vegetarian Mexican recipes. This is what I made:

Black Bean Enchiladas

2 tbsp olive oil
1/2 cup yellow onion
1 chopped red pepper
1 cup chopped baby bella mushrooms
2 cloves of garlic minced
1 can black beans rinsed, 1/2 the can should be chopped up or put in a food processor (this gives the whole thing a creamy texture)
2 cups chopped spinach
1/4 to 1/2 cup water
salt
pepper
cumin
cayenne ground
smoked paprika
chili powder
trader joes salsa (red or green, the super runny kind)
6 flour or corn tortillas
shredded cheese
sour cream

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Heat the olive oil in a large saute pan, medium temp. When its nice and hot add in the onion and red pepper. Saute until nice and soft, maybe even a bit carmelized. Then add in the mushrooms cook them til they become soft and change color a bit. Next you should add in the garlic, black beans and spinach. (I don’t saute the garlic too much because I read somewhere it makes it lose some of the health benefits) Cook until the spinach wilts. Turn off the heat and one by one add in the spices and the water to make it a little thinner. I usually taste a little after each spice, so nothing is too overwhelming.

Now that you’ve spiced it up, you’re ready to fill the tortillas. Put a few tablespoons of bean mixture into each tortilla. Before you roll it up, put a tiny bit of cheese inside. Then roll it up and put it edge side down a oiled up baking dish. Once you have all the filled tortillas lined up in the pan, pour 1/2 the jar of Trader Joe’s salsa on top. Top the salsa with a 1/2 cup more of cheese. Cover with tin foil and bake for 30 minutes, or until the cheese and melty and the tortillas are nice and hot.

Then serve with sour cream and more salsa! Maybe some pineapple or chopped salad as a side.

I hope you enjoy it.

My parents. I love them. I am so lucky to have a fantastic family. They are in Italy right now enjoying every minute of it. I keep wishing I could be there like a little fly on the wall to see what they are doing and how much they are enjoying it!

Running!

image

I love to run. I hate thinking about running or preparing to run, but once I get out the door, I LOVE IT. It is freeing, relaxing. It gives me a chance to stop thinking and just let one foot move in front of the other. It keeps me in shape and helps me burn of the dessert I eat everyday.

I just finished the Little Rock marathon two weeks ago. It was so much fun. It was my first marathon and I am sure I’ll do more. I feel so accomplished now!

I’ve been running for 14 years. I’ve taken a few brakes, but I don’t see myself ever quitting.

Get ready, set, go!

To start off, I’m going to do a daily post about something I’m interested in. One of my hobbies or something I occasionally enjoy doing. Get ready for it!
